Medieval Camp in the Canadian Badlands

Complete with costumes, an elaborate medieval feast, and lavishly themed tents, Good Knights Medieval Encampment is a pretty memorable way to spend a night on the prairies. Located just a short drive from Drumheller (near Three Hills, Alberta) this unique camp brings glamping to the Canadian Badlands with flair. Here are a few visual highlights from my stay.

Buckhorn Saloon in San Antonio, Texas

Featuring an impressive collection of wall-mounted taxidermy, the Buckhorn Saloon in downtown San Antonio, Texas is truly a sight to behold. What was once the private collection of Albert Friedrich, is now an elaborate public display giving the Buckhorn its unmistakable charm. Even if you only have time for a quick drink, the Buckhorn Saloon is worth a look.

Monarch Theatre in Medicine Hat, Alberta

On December 21, 1911 the Monarch Theatre celebrated its grand opening in downtown Medicine Hat, Alberta, and has since been recognized as one of the oldest theatres (if not the oldest purpose-built cinema) in Canada to be constructed specifically for showing films. When it opened it had 560 seats and space for a four piece band.

In the 1910s the original design of the Monarch Theatre featured an arched entry way with an exterior ticket booth. This design was updated to the current Art Deco style in the 1930s.

More than a century on, the Monarch Theatre remains a charming historic landmark within the downtown core. As improvements progress and appreciation grows, I can only hope that movie-goers continue to see the value in preserving and utilizing this distinctly local cinema.
