Hawaii State Capitol in Honolulu

Hawaii became the 50th and most recent state to join the United States in 1959. As a result, it also has a relatively modern capitol building. Located in downtown Honolulu, it was completed in 1969 and took the place of the Iolani Palace as the official statehouse of the government.

The architecture of the building highlights the natural landscape of Hawaii. A reflecting pool that surrounds the structure is representative of the Pacific Ocean. The columns resemble palm trees, and the 8 on the front and back represent the 8 main Hawaiian Islands. The legislative chambers are also cone shaped to represent the volcanoes that formed the islands. Finally, the atrium is open to the elements, and it's said that the sky is Hawaii's capitol rotunda.
