Medicine Hat Flood 2013: Part 1

My hometown of Medicine Hat, Alberta is currently in a state of emergency as preparations have been ongoing for the impending flood at our doorstep. From volunteers sandbagging at Elm Street School to night crews working into the wee hours of the morning to safeguard City Hall along River Road, I've captured some incredible actions in the last 48 hours. 

I've watched the river consistently rise in this time, but the worst is yet to come. In line with what we've seen in the mountains and Calgary, this flood is predicted to be an aggressive one as it makes its way into the southeast of the province. After spending over a year photographing the history of my hometown, this is the first time I feel that I've been capturing history in the making. Stay safe Hatters. Downtown Moose Jaw: Part 1

After the popularity of my images from a brief stop in Moose Jaw last year, I decided it would be fun to do another photo set while passing through on my way to Regina. It was a gray day as I was being chased by a rainstorm most of the trip, but I still managed to get some cool shots of main street and downtown. I played with a lot of filters to give these shots even more character and emphasize the vintage vibe of the locale. 


I was stopped several times by locals (all friendly old folks fittingly) who offered up tons of stories about the places I was photographing. It was really charming and only made me further appreciate what I was capturing. I love exploring Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan!

Pacific Northwest, Here We Come

I've always been one for road trips. From Mount Rushmore to California, I've done a lot of my exploring by car in these last few years. It's also why my buddy Mike dropped me a line and brought up the idea of going on a road trip this summer. I was game from the get-go, and after a short back and forth about destinations, we had our stops booked, our route mapped out, and now it's official - this summer we'll be road tripping the Pacific Northwest for 9 days.

A few of the big motivators for exploring this part of the country are that Mike has never been to the ocean before, and I, having driven the coast highway with my friend Dave in California, really wanted to complete the journey by driving it in Oregon and Washington. We're also both looking forward to exploring Portland and Seattle and all of the amazing stuff nearby - like the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum, where Howard Hughes' Spruce Goose is.

In typical fashion, I'm likely to shoot a lot of new photo sets and video along the way, so there should be lots to share later this year. In short, I'm just glad one of the many trip ideas I had on the table for 2013 actually panned out. This is sure to be another amazing trip. We're going to have a blast, Mike!
