Medalta's Black & White Gala 2015

medalta black white gala 2015I was once again on hand to capture Medalta's Black & White Gala this year. The event was held on October 30, and in addition to the usual fun of photographing the event, I was asked to take part in a gala tradition and come up with an original design for a dinnerware set that would be featured in the live auction.

My photography / graphic design work isn't exactly the same as ceramic artists or painters or illustrators when it comes to projects like this, so naturally I was a bit nervous about what I might do. In the end, I decided I'd feature iconic signs and text from around Medicine Hat, Alberta that I'd shot as part of my Around the Hat series. The resulting design was then put on a 12 piece set of vintage Hycroft China. This was the result.

Overall, it was a really great experience. The dinnerware set ended up going for over $3000 in the auction, and I had a blast reconnecting with everyone in attendance at this annual event. The Black & White Gala is Medalta's largest fundraising event of the year, and allows Medalta to continue expanding the various community programs that they offer.

Portfolio 6.0

Over the last few weeks I've made some massive updates to my website and portfolio. Much of it has been behind the scenes to fix links, switch out old content, and streamline a few of my layouts. This kind of thing is always a work in process, however the biggest change has been the complete overhaul of my portfolio site - fandrix.com.

I always like to talk about simplicity in regards to my portfolio. It's meant to be my online hub, linking to all of my social media, latest projects, contact info, and this blog. My portfolio has never looked as clean or had a more streamlined and user friendly mobile version for cell phones and tablets. See the latest changes for yourself.

Portfolio Updates: Fandrix 5.0

It's been a year since I last updated my portfolio site, but because of issues with the mobile version not being viewable on iPads and iPhones it was time that I upgraded with HTML5. All this really means is that fandrix.com is now viewable on all devices. The best thing is actually having all of my social media hotlinks (facebook, twitter, blogger, youtube, and instagram) easily accessible from every page. I've stuck with simplicity for my portfolio, keeping it a hub to launch you into other parts of my online network. See for yourself!

Evolution of Editing Luke (2013-2014)

It's been a while since my last recap on the evolution of Editing Luke, in which I share some of my favorite blog headers that I created for my site. In this 5th installment you can see that variety is still very much a key element in my designs - something that is unlikely to change anytime soon. Here are the collection of headers I've used on Editing Luke between September 2013 to June 2014 (from newest to oldest).

New Editing Luke Business Cards

It was time to order new business cards for Editing Luke, so I came up with a few new designs to promote my photography, video, and portfolio site. I used images from my Instagram account to highlight some of the various projects I've worked on in the last year, and I also thought it made the variations really standout. The response has been great so far, and I can't wait to get these cards circulating.

Portfolio Updates: Fandrix 4.0

Keeping my portfolio fresh and engaging has always been important to me. Much like this blog, I believe an original design, strong visuals, and a straightforward layout go a long way in making a memorable first impression. The changes I made to my portfolio this year were mostly stylistic, but additions like a scrolling image bar have made it easier than ever for me to feature new content and projects I'm excited about.

The new portfolio is flash, which means you'll be redirected to my bare bones mobile version if you're trying to view it on an iPhone or iPad (they don't allow flash unfortunately). Otherwise, the new look is pretty sweet and I'm excited to finally share it. Have a look at my updated portfolio here.

Evolution of Editing Luke (2012-2013)

It's that time again, when I take a brief look back at some of my blog banners from the last year. There have clearly been a lot of changes, but as many of you know, experimentation has always been a fundamental part of keeping my site fresh. These headers pinpoint a number of updates, but more than that, they prove that even after all of these years the evolution hasn't slowed down.
