Located in New York Harbor, Ellis Island was once the busiest immigration and processing station in the United States of America. Within view of the Statue of Liberty, from 1892 to 1954 more than 12 million immigrants were processed at Ellis Island as they arrived at the Port of New York and New Jersey. It's believed as many as 2/5 of the American population may be descended from the immigrants that passed through Ellis Island.
