As we drove through the redwoods of northern California, my friend Mike and I were greeted by Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox in Klamath. I've always believed that unexpected roadside attractions are the key to making any journey a bit more memorable, and it's not just because my hometown boasts a giant steel teepee next to the highway.
Before we continued our drive deeper into the redwoods, I felt like I should grab a souvenir while I had the chance. There were lots of odds and ends, but I was looking for something that really sold the experience of seeing monuments to a lumberjack and blue ox in person. Clearly this required serious consideration. Then I saw the perfect memento on a back shelf. Now I'm reminded of the brief stop we made in Klamath, California every time I see my Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox salt and pepper shakers. Nailed it.
