I'd be lying if I didn't admit that Portlandia was part of the inspiration for wanting to visit Portland, Oregon in the first place. We stayed directly downtown, and it was without even looking that we continued to stumble onto the culture of the show. The intro of Portlandia had ingrained a lot of the visuals in my mind. From signs to souvenirs, Portland has clearly embraced it. A few of the waitresses we had joked about it, and casual people-watching highlighted some of the stereotypes the show is based around. The diner next to our hotel even referenced the 'put a bird on it' sketch on their menu. For me, Portland felt just like a giant trendy neighbourhood, and I have to thank Portlandia for helping me embrace it before I even got there.
